Freestanding or wall-hung? Single or double? Navigating the world of bathroom vanities can be overwhelming. Learn how to select the perfect centerpiece for your space.
The vanity is arguably the most important piece of furniture in your bathroom. It anchors the space visually, hides your plumbing, and provides crucial storage. With so many styles and configurations available, how do you choose the right one?
Step 1: Determine the Installation Type
Wall-Hung (Floating) Vanities
Floating vanities are the go-to choice for contemporary bathrooms. By keeping the floor visible beneath the unit, they create an illusion of more space, making them ideal for smaller bathrooms or en-suites. Plus, cleaning the floor underneath is a breeze.
Freestanding Vanities
Freestanding vanities offer maximum storage capacity and a classic, substantial look. They are often easier to install (requiring less structural wall support) and can hide awkward existing plumbing layouts during a renovation.
Step 2: Size and Configuration
Single Bowl: Perfect for powder rooms, guest bathrooms, or tight master suites. Usually ranges from 24" to 48" wide.
Double Bowl: The dream for busy master bathrooms. You'll generally need at least 60" of width to comfortably fit two sinks without sacrificing counter space.
Step 3: Finding the Right Finish
The finish of your vanity should complement your tile selection, not compete with it. If you've chosen a bold, patterned floor tile, opt for a simple matte white or oak vanity. If your tiles are neutral, a vanity in deep navy, sage green, or rich walnut can serve as a stunning focal point.
Step 4: Top and Basin Selection
Consider how you use the space. Under-mount basins with stone / quartz tops offer the easiest cleaning experience, while vessel sinks provide a striking, hotel-inspired aesthetic.
